Shared memories create common identity. Identity is structured through the moments we encounter in life—those we live through, those we survive, and those we celebrate.

We cannot think of ourselves as people without preserving the history that shapes us—moments that become memories, and memories that shape our identity. Just as individuals create moments that become the stories of their lives, so too do communities. We are only because we carry the collective memories of historical occurrences.
